Basic Skin Care

Skin is the largest organ of the body. Functions of the Skin: • It helps us perceive stimuli such as touch, heat, cold, pain. • It regulates temperature & also helps in the metabolism of vitamin D. • It protects the underlying structures by forming a mechanical barrier & also acts as a UV alter & protects from sun damage. • Factors like pollution, sun rays, stress, irregular food habits, inadequate sleep etc. contribute to skin damage & premature aging of the skin. Thus, it is important to take mair pare of one's skin. Pasie skin care does not inveive use of expan: he cosmetics & ameries. One has to follow a very simple regime for skin • Diet : A well - balanced, regular diet along with adequate amount of water is all that you need, one must avoid so called junk food, too much of starvation in the form of dieting & eating at odd irregular hours. • Exercise : at least 30 minutes of aerobics, walking, jogging or cycling at least 5 times a week is essential for a healthy skin. • Sun protection : UVA & UVB rays could be harsh on the skin & cause photo damage in the form of increased pigmentation, freckles, premature ageing, wrinkling, sagging & even skin cancer. • Photoaging : Photo-pigmentation, wrinkles sagging skin can be delayed with generous use of sun screens. • Use a sun screen with an SPF 30 at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and then every 2 hourly during day time. Higher the SPF better it is as people don't apply adequate amount of sun screen. • Use an umbrella or a broad brimmed hat / cap / scarf for sun protection.

Intra Lesional Therapy

Various drugs (corticosteroids, 5 flurouracil) are directly delivered into the skin lesions through injections. It is used for lichen simplex chronicus (chronic thick eczema patches), cystic acne, alopecia areata (localised hair loss), hypertrophic scars and keloids, hypertrophic lichen planus. Drugs can also be injected into the nail matrix.
